Tooth Extraction

When a tooth has to come out, and what comes next.

An extraction is sometimes the right call: a cracked tooth that can't be saved, severe decay, advanced periodontal disease, or making room for orthodontic treatment. We do simple and complex extractions in-office, and we always talk through replacement options before the procedure, not after.

Why an extraction might be the right call

We try to save teeth when saving them is reasonable. Sometimes it's not: a vertical root fracture, an abscess that won't respond, a tooth that's been root-canaled and re-treated and is failing again. Holding on to a tooth past its useful life often costs more than replacing it.

What happens during the visit

Local anesthetic, the extraction itself, and packing if needed. For complex extractions (broken teeth, retained roots, deeply impacted teeth) we may use sedation. You go home with instructions, gauze, and a follow-up scheduled.

What about replacing it?

This is the part most people don't think about until later. A missing tooth shifts the bite over time, and the bone underneath shrinks. The longer you wait, the more work future replacement takes.

We talk about your options (implant, bridge, or accepting the gap) before extraction. In many cases, we can place a bone graft at the time of extraction to preserve the site for a future implant. That choice matters less if you're certain you don't want to replace the tooth, but it's worth deciding before the day of surgery.
