Sinus Lift
Making room in the upper jaw for implants.
Above your upper back teeth are your maxillary sinuses. When those teeth have been missing for years, the bone between the mouth and the sinus thins out, sometimes to the point where there isn't enough to place an implant. A sinus lift adds bone height so implants become possible.
When you need one
Sinus lift is typically needed for upper back-tooth implants when bone height between the jaw and the sinus floor is less than what the implant requires. We can tell from your CBCT scan whether it's necessary.
How it works
The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward, creating a space we fill with bone graft material. Over a few months, that material is replaced with your own bone. Once it's healed, the implant can be placed, sometimes at the same visit, sometimes later.
Alternative for severe cases
When the upper jaw is severely resorbed and sinus lifts would require multiple stages and a long timeline, we sometimes recommend zygomatic implants instead, anchoring into the cheekbone and skipping the sinus entirely.
That trade (a more advanced surgery in exchange for skipping months of staged grafting) is right for some cases and not others. The CBCT tells us which.
