ARE YOU BRUSHING THE RIGHT WAY?

We are constantly asked how many times a day we brush at our routine dental checkups. So why is it so important to brush your teeth regularly? Brushing is one of the most important ways to remove plaque, prevent cavities, strengthens gums and reduce staining ensuring you a healthy and clean mouth to last a lifetime. Dental problems can start occurring if we neglect our oral hygiene. Most of us say we brush regularly, but are we brushing the right way, or effectively? Here are some tips to look over that may help you improve your brushing method so you can get the most out of your daily brushing routine.

When brushing, focus on the hard to reach back teeth, gum line, and dental restorations.

  • Start by brushing in sections at a 45-degree angle with firm pressure on the teeth and gum line
  • Move the brush across teeth in short, circular motions
  • Brush the outer surfaces of the upper teeth, and the same with the lower teeth
  • Brush the inner surfaces of the upper teeth, and the same with lower teeth
  • Brush the chewing surfaces of the top and bottom teeth by applying short back and forth strokes
  • To finish, brush your tongue to clear out collected bacteria and freshen breath

Make sure you change your tooth brush at least every three months or when you notice the bristles are becoming worn. A worn tooth brush won’t help you clean effectively. Also don’t forget to floss!
